Two Tips for a Budget-Friendly Garage Renovation

Construction & Contractors Blog

Here are some tips for a budget-friendly garage renovation.

Polish the concrete instead of laying new flooring

If like most garages, yours has a concrete floor, then you may have assumed that, in order to improve the garage's appearance, you would need to lay some new flooring. Concrete floors don't usually look that attractive, due to their rough texture and dull, pitted appearance. However, if you're on a budget, it might be better to have a concrete polishing contractor polish the garage floor instead of buying and laying new flooring.

Having the floor polished will probably be much cheaper than purchasing flooring materials and paying someone to lay them. Even more importantly, it could make the floor look just as good as, for example, some tiles. The polishing machine will grind away all of the pitting and bumps on the upper layer of the concrete and leave behind a gleaming, flawless finish that will look far more pleasing to the eye.

Introduce light with a new door instead of fitting windows

Garages often lack natural light. If you want to ensure that you can easily see and admire your beautifully polished concrete floor, you'll need to find a way to add more light to the garage's interior. If the reason you're renovating your garage is to start using it as a living space (for example, if you're turning it into an extra bedroom), then the building regulations in your state may require you to add windows to make it fit for this purpose. However, if you just want to spruce the garage up and will only be using it as a workshop, storage or parking area, then you could reduce your renovation costs by introducing light via a new door, instead of fitting windows.

For example, you could get a garage door that has large glass panels that will allow lots of light into the space, but will be much cheaper than fitting windows. If you do this, your only expense will be buying the door itself (as you should be able to fit it without help, provided you have some power tools and basic DIY skills). However, if you were to fit some windows, you'd not only have to purchase the windows but would also need a contractor to create the holes in the walls (this has to be done by a professional, as it's a tricky job that could lead to the wall becoming unstable if it's done incorrectly).

Building a new granny flat

We needed to get a new granny flat built, as ours was starting to look shabby and had a roof leak we couldn't stem. We knew it would need some upgraded features so that we could start renting it out for extra income. I spent a lot of time researching which features get the best rental returns and how to get the granny flat built as quickly and effortlessly as possible. I read a lot from a lot of online sources and interviewed other home owners who have new granny flats so we could get the best structure built. This blog has tips for people looking to build new granny flats for their home.
